Hispano HA-1112-M1L Buchón — ‘White 9’
Hispano HA-1112-M1L Buchón ‘White 9’ is confirmed for the Headcorn International Airshow flying display. For the latest additions and changes, visit Aircraft Updates.
About the aircraft
The Hispano Buchón is a post-war Spanish development of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 design. While it shares the famous fighter silhouette, the Buchón is distinct in both configuration and powerplant.
Unlike wartime Bf 109s fitted with the Daimler-Benz DB 605, the Buchón was equipped with a Rolls-Royce Merlin 500/45, giving it the distinctive “chin” intake that led to its nickname Buchón (Spanish for “pouter pigeon”).
Markings: what “White 9” represents
This aircraft is finished in the ‘White 9’ markings, representing a German Luftwaffe Bf 109 scheme associated with Jagdgeschwader 52 during the Second World War.
For visitors comparing types in the display, see our Aircraft Line-Up).
Film connection: Battle of Britain
Buchóns are also widely recognised for their role in the 1969 film Battle of Britain, where they were used to portray Bf 109s on screen. That unique connection has helped make the type instantly recognisable well beyond aviation circles.
